#GivingTuesday2018 Press Release

[ROCKVILLE, MD, November 26] “In 2012, my husband John was suddenly diagnosed with ALS. Shortly thereafter he, and life as our family knew it, passed away. Grieving and uncertainty filled the wake of his passing. However, the loving care and support from close friends and church members calmed these waves, transitioning me into this new season of life. I will be forever grateful for the love and care I received during the most challenging time of my life.”-- Kathy, Widowed.

Widowhood is absolutely heartbreaking and the grief is unimaginable, but Widow Care aims to empower the 680,204 widowed persons, like Kathy, who are living in the DC metropolitan area. Widow Care is ramping up for our #GivingTuesday2018 campaign. Giving Tuesday is a global day of philanthropy held annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. This year, The Eric Stewart Group of Long and Foster has graciously offered to match up to $15,000 in donations to Widow Care! For instance, if you donate $25, your contribution will be matched by another $25 for a total of $50!

We aim to raise $5,000 on November 27th to help fund programs & monthly events. We aim to refine & re-launch our “Care Driver” program which offers specialized volunteer care to local widows and widowers. Here’s what past members have to say about this service: “As a widow, there can be things that overwhelm you or that you relied on your husband to do. With that can come stress, anxiety and feelings of isolation. I am so very grateful for Widow Care’s immediate and compassionate response to my request for volunteers who have graciously and selflessly helped me organize paperwork and learn new computer skills. Widowhood is a life-altering experience and yet widows and widowers can be an “invisible” population-- but we’re out there with needs.”-- Leann, Widowed from Rockville.

Our Matching Donations campaign allows you to create double the impact without breaking the bank. Donate now at widowcare.org/donate, or via our Facebook page.  If you would like more information about Widow Care, please email Marissa at marissa@widowcare.org, or call (301) 349-7838.

Widow Care is a nonprofit that aims to provide targeted and accessible programs to DC, Maryland and Virginia residents facing the loss of a spouse, to empower their walk through grief and new challenges. These services include monthly peer support groups, social meet-ups and a directory of resources to help organize post-bereavement obligations.
